This time, after I restarted VS , it worked for some strange reason. The reference should be added to the project when the control is added to the page, I'm not sure why this happened.

So what could be the work around to fix this issue???? Configure your tag prefix in web. It's fine even if you keep it in the page itself. Make sure you have a reference to the AjaxControlToolkit in your application and change the assembly name to that of the web application that contains the controls just during the conversion:.
